DUNCAN – New telephone polls conducted by Insights West show a similar pattern across the federal ridings of Nanaimo-Ladysmith and Cowichan-Malahat-Langford. In both of the adjacent ridings, the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidates hold a modest lead over the Conservative Party contenders, with Greens in third place and the Liberals in fourth.

As we look back at the summer just past we can breathe a sigh of relief at the outcome.  It did not look good for the health of our river and we got to within a few weeks of it running dry.  The huge amount of rain we received in the first part of September eased of our concerns and now the river and lake are full and the salmon are easily making their way upstream to their spawning grounds. 

I need to admit that there have been times when our national politics has sucked the hope right out of me. The nasty, scorched earth brand of ruling perfected by the current government in Ottawa makes our democracy distasteful and diminishes us all.
