Q1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you are running.

A: I was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley. I’ve been a dual tradesman and travelled for work all across BC. Experiencing this vast province has given me a deep appreciation for the beautiful ecological and diverse cultural setting of the Cowichan Valley. In 1991 I purchased 10 acres of land in the West Kootenays where I developed and built my first farm, Soil Matters. In 2002 I purchased the land that has been in my family for over 50 years and transformed it into Dragonfly Farms, my second successful small scale farm modelling sustainable practices.

As a resident of Area E I am passionate about the area I live in; I work and earn my living here. I have a lot to offer my community in achieving sustainability, and look forward to working as a director with the CVRD and Area E Residents in collaboration and partnership. It is my intent to maintain and improve upon this community for our future generations.

Q2. The community survey results placed a high priority on sustainability, in particular on protecting our watersheds, water supply and water quality, as well as on creating a more sustainable local economy. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: My belief is to lead by example and through my 23 years of full time farming utilizing and promoting practices without the use of chemical or synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, I continue to demonstrate this. Fundamentally I know that success for farmers can be measured by ecologically sound practices, which includes protecting the watershed, aquifers, and promoting a clean environment.

Promoting our local economy: 1. All sustainability is based upon diversity – ecological practices, agriculture, small and large scale business all must thread together to build a strong local economy. 2. Developing partnerships with VIU and local business for apprenticeship programs to address local needs.

Watershed Protection: 1. Develop a strong regional growth strategy based upon a clear understanding of our natural water systems, and their limitations in combination with the agricultural land reserve to guide pragmatic development for a sustainable future.

Q3. The survey results indicated citizens want to see more consultation and accountability between elected officials and their constituents. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: I believe in the promotion and defence of our democracy and I will listen and engage in open consultation with my constituents before decisions are made by holding regular community meetings in Sahtlam, Glenora, and Cowichan Station. All groups affected by any decision need to be heard and provided with an opportunity for their interests to be considered. I will advocate for my community at the CVRD board.

Q4. What is your position on municipal tax rates and the corresponding level and allocation of services?

A: We are not a secular society and all decisions impact the greater community in some way. We all require a level playing field to support local economy and environmental concerns; allocation of services should be provided in equal measure to all Cowichan Valley residents.

Q5. What is your vision for this area, and how would getting elected help achieve it?

A: Through the promotion of small business, agriculture, and sustainable water use practices, my vision is to expand and promote a strong and robust economy built on cottage and craft industry with agriculture known for its quality and excellence. As Director with the CVRD board I will ensure all Area E interests are on the agenda and goals are achieved.
