Help Fix Our Broken Democracy

Our democracy is broken.

The makeup of the Canadian Parliament doesn’t reflect how we voted, so neither do its decisions.

In ridings like Cowichan-Malahat-Langford where this year's election will be close, many voters are rightly worried that voting for their first choice may instead help elect their last choice.

All this is because Canada is one of the last few industrialized nations to hang on to the outdated “first past the post” voting system where the winner takes all, and other voices don’t count – even if they are the majority!

For example, in the last federal election, the Conservatives won absolute power with 39% of votes cast (and only 26% of eligible voters).

(If you need a fun way to explain this all, check out this First Past the Pizza video)

Worse, the Harper Government has used its majority in Parliament to weaken our election watchdog and to give political parties more power.

What Can We Do?

There is a movement across the country to fix our broken democracy with a modern voting system, and we voters in Cowichan can make it stronger by coming together and using our voice for change.

On Canada Day (July 1), we will present each of the candidates running to earn the privilege to represent Cowican-Malahat-Langford a petition of what we hope will be thousands of local citizens telling them of our intention to vote for somebody with a mandate for changing our voting system.

Some of the parties are already supportive, and our voices will give others a needed push.

Dear Candidate:

Thank you for running to represent the riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford. Our democracy relies on choices given to voters, and your candidacy provides that choice.

But, our democracy is currently broken because a party with a minority of votes can wield 100% of the power, thereby shutting out a majority of the voters.

Worse, instead of fixing this problem, recent changes have weakened our electoral watchdog and given political parties more power!

It doesn't have to be this way. Canada lags far behind other industrialized countries in implementing a voting system where all our votes count.

I am therefore adding my voice to other voters who will vote for a candidate who has a mandate to change our voting system.

I would like you to talk with your party leader to tell him that this is an issue that voters in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford take seriously, and I look forward to hearing your response.

Yours sincerely,
