Heather Campbell

Municipality of North Cowichan Candidate

Q1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you are running.

A: My son and i moved to North Cowichan 18 years ago from Langley. During this time I have laid down some good roots. For 16 of these years, I have cared and advocated for seniors at both Carinsmore and Cowichan Lodge. I have taken in foster kids. I volunteered for hospice. I am currently working with children and adults with mental disabilities. I am a listener and an advocator for people. I would like to continue this work as a Councillor, and work for the people of this Municipality.

Q2. The community survey results placed a high priority on sustainability, in particular on protecting our watersheds, water supply and water quality, as well as on creating a more sustainable local economy. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: This is my home; where i choose to live. I believe we need to protect and care for our environment. I also put a high priority on sustainability of our water supply and it quality. As a Councillor, if elected, I will work with the Provincial Government to protect it.Companies from Victoria have no right dumping their contaminants in our backyard jeopardizing our watersheds.

Q3. The survey results indicated citizens want to see more consultation and accountability between elected officials and their constituents. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A:

Q4. What is your position on municipal tax rates and the corresponding level and allocation of services?

A: I think taxes are getting to high and we owe too much money. We need to put a freeze on taxes and stop spending on unnecessary things. With the amount of staff and machinery our municipality has, a lot of the work should be done in house, not contracting out. Our council has to stop using our tax money as a slush fund. They need to work within a budget  and stop raising taxes.

Q5. What is your vision for this area, and how would getting elected help achieve it?

A: My vision for our community is to have a thriving local economy with all the amenities needed for a first rate desirable community. I would like to see more local businesses competing with the big box stores. Our community supporting them so they don't end up closing. I would like to promote our local business. We need our local businesses and I would like to see them do well.
