Q1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you are running.

A: Born in Quebec City to a military family I’ve lived here there and everywhere. I am a retired Senior Para-legal and small business owner having owned businesses in Canada and Germany. I am a straight shooting, call it as it is, roll up your sleeves and get the job done kind of gal.  I believe in honest, open, transparent government that takes direction from the people they serve.

I decided to run for office because of the negative effects that years of high taxes and over spending have had on our community.  A change is needed.

Q2. The community survey results placed a high priority on sustainability, in particular on protecting our watersheds, water supply and water quality, as well as on creating a more sustainable local economy. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: The viability, safety and quality of our water supply must be protected. I would like to see a stronger focus on education along with incentives for collection of rain water which we have an abundance of.

Sensible and reliable tax rates encourage investment.  We need to  advertise the many wonders of our  municipality. We need a solid growth plan that incorporates tourism, large and small business investment and residential development all of which are achievable if we lower our tax rates and improve our service.

Q3. The survey results indicated citizens want to see more consultation and accountability between elected officials and their constituents. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: Far too many issues are taken “in camera” which feeds the “us against them” perception that hangs over Municipal Hall like an ominous cloud. Council must insist on compliance with the regulations that govern in camera sessions. They must also “rise and report” following in camera sessions. If elected I will insist on strict adherence to the regulations.

I am a firm believer in transparent accountable governance. If elected I will report to the public weekly on an interactive blog. We need a review how we deliver customer service and strive for the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Q4. What is your position on municipal tax rates and the corresponding level and allocation of services?

A: Residents can no longer shoulder the burden of increasing taxes. A reduction in tax rates and spending levels is needed to stop the exodus of seniors, young families and businesses.

Ongoing monitoring  of service levels and allocation will ensure equality throughout the municipality.

Q5. What is your vision for this area, and how would getting elected help achieve it?

A: My vision is one that will attract families while at the same time provide opportunities for economic development.  Chemainus and Crofton are incredible gems that should attract growth and  development providing taxes are kept at a reasonable rate. By ensuring our development and business processes are timely, user friendly and customer oriented we can erase the negative reputation associated with doing business in North Cowichan. We hold the keys to our success and I am confident that with ample input and consultation with the people we serve that we can make North Cowichan the best place to call home.

I believe I possess the skills, experience and common sense required to help North Cowichan prosper. We can have incredible amenities while at the same time keeping taxes low. It is a matter of setting priorities, taking care of needs first and wants later.  It is about inviting investment and development to the table thereby increasing our tax base. It is about seeking partners to share the costs of new initiatives, amenities and infrastructure.   It is time for a change of direction and a change of leadership. I would like to be a part of that change.
