Raise the Weir Already!

We've been talking about raising the weir at the head of the Cowichan River for so many years. It's time to get it done! Your voice can help make this happen.

We're facing yet another summer of likely drought conditions - we'll see this a lot with climate change - but still don't have the ability to store more water in Cowichan Lake to release when needed. This will further stress fish populations and threaten the future of the Crofton mill that uses water from the river. (Here is more background on the issues).

First Nations, local government, the provincial government, and the federal government all agree we need to get it done, yet here we are still just talking about it, and talking about it some more.

We need more urgency from government officials at all levels to get it done! Please add your voice to the relevant decision makers on the letter below to urge them to act now.

Thank you.

Dear Sirs:

We have been talking about raising the weir at Cowichan Lake for too long. It's time to get it done.

We are facing yet another summer of likely drought which will damage fish populations and place jobs at the mill in Crofton at risk.

There is wide consensus about raising the weir so I urge you to direct your staff to work more urgently with Cowichan Tribes and other levels of government to get it done.

Yours sincerely,
