Statement On Proposed New BC Water Law

Today the BC Government released a proposal to update our water law. Matt Price of One Cowichan had this statement:

"We’re encouraged that the proposal has language that opens the door to 'the delegation and/or sharing of responsibility and accountability for decisions.' We believe that the Cowichan Watershed Board, that has First Nations as a full partner, is a great candidate for this kind of delegation so that decisions affecting our water can be made here at home.

We’re also concerned, however, that the proposal is too weak in requiring limits on water use to protect our steams, having decision makers only 'consider' this kind of factor. We need clear, enforceable standards if water abuse is to end. The final law needs to be strengthened."

People can provide feedback to the proposal by Friday, November 15th at [email protected]
