Q1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you are running.

A: Resident of Lake Cowichan for 25 years, Married to my wife Betty for 37 years Father of 2, Grandfather of 2. Past Coach of Minor Hockey, Past member of Lakeside Players and Coach of Electric Wheelchair Hockey Team. Cowichan Lake Community Forest Co-Op Vice Chair. I am running because I believe I can contribute to the betterment of our Community. I have Experience, and realize the Duties and Responsibilities of Council.  I am an Honest, compassionate listener and will do my best for what is best for our Community.

Q2. The community survey results placed a high priority on sustainability, in particular on protecting our watersheds, water supply and water quality, as well as on creating a more sustainable local economy. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: Sustainability should be a concern for not only each area, but also for The Region as a whole. A uniform Region wide Sustainability Plan could help in attaining smart, sustainable growth. The Town of Lake Cowichan has been Mandated by Island Health to Implement Secondary Treatment for our Water Supply.  Sources of Funds, other then Taxation should be sought for this project.

Q3. The survey results indicated citizens want to see more consultation and accountability between elected officials and their constituents. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: Community Consultation and Accountability are key to successful implementation of projects. Even though all meetings are open to the Public, with busy schedules, and work commitments, attendance can be sparse.  An online tool for Community input, and consultation may be a helpful tool as well as personal contact with each elected official. Public Meetings are currently planned twice a year, and perhaps a couple more might be helpful.

Q4. What is your position on municipal tax rates and the corresponding level and allocation of services?

A: Because Property Taxation is the only means of raising funds given to Municipalities by The Province, with no consideration on ability to pay, a continued effort is needed by all Jurisdictions  to Lobby The Province for other Financial Tools to Raise Funds.

Q5. What is your vision for this area, and how would getting elected help achieve it?

A: I love Lake Cowichan for all it has to offer, but there are some limitations. My Vision is to see a Seniors Care Facility in our Community, where Local People can stay and age in their own area. Also the Implementation of Affordable Housing Standards within our Subdivision Bylaws, encouraging Developers to implement affordable units within their projects.  Also continue to ensure that a new Elementary School remains the Number one Capital Project within our School District.  A diverse Community, is a Healthy Community.
