Q1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and why you are running.

A: I moved to the Cowichan Valley in 1989 to raise my family, I have recently retired from 37.5 years of public service and volunteer work with my union which has provided me with excellent interpersonal skills, experience in policy development and implementation, budgeting and negotiations, I want to continue to put these skills to work for my community.

Q2. The community survey results placed a high priority on sustainability, in particular on protecting our watersheds, water supply and water quality, as well as on creating a more sustainable local economy. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: I support local control of our watersheds, our local government must have input on local water decisions.  Our City has a very good plan for water conservation and emergency chlorination, we need to identify aging infrastructure and develop a plan for upgrades.

Q3. The survey results indicated citizens want to see more consultation and accountability between elected officials and their constituents. If elected, please describe what your approach would be to those issues.

A: The City has undertaken several methods of consultation with our citizens, most recently, a citizen survey was completed in the summer, we have used booths at local farmers markets, and at the aquatic centre for public input on our active transportation plan, internet outreach through programs like Place-speak and open meetings along with our newsletter provide many opportunities for consultation, I support continuing these efforts at engagement.

Q4. What is your position on municipal tax rates and the corresponding level and allocation of services?

A: I believe we have a good balance of taxation for the services our citizens want in Duncan, I have attended our last 3 budget open house meetings and the people who attended provided positive comments on our taxation and budgeting for the City."

Q5. What is your vision for this area, and how would getting elected help achieve it?

A: My priorities if re-elected are, review our Zoning By-laws and Official community Plan, develop a plan to maintain and upgrade our infrastructure, Continue to work on our City Strategic Plan. Ensure that any changes to our City Governance, boundaries, or amalgamation are for the benefit of the citizens of Duncan.
