I need to admit that there have been times when our national politics has sucked the hope right out of me. The nasty, scorched earth brand of ruling perfected by the current government in Ottawa makes our democracy distasteful and diminishes us all.

Our family is very lucky to be living on the Cowichan River and we often find ourselves sitting in the river on hot afternoons.  There are hundreds of coho fry living in the river in our back yard as well.  I am often reminded of their presence as they gently bump into my legs when I sit quietly on a rock in the river.  A coho bump feels like someone gently touching your leg with the tip of their finger.   They must think I would taste good or something.

This summer while fishing for chinook salmon on the Dean River we noticed an absence of larger salmon in the 25 pound and up class.  These fish would have been 5 years old and they were largely absent because of some catastrophic floods that occurred in the Dean in 2010.  The salmon had spawned in the fall and the subsequent floods destroyed many of the spawning beds, killing most of their eggs.
